Fear of a negative come back if their response is challenged or their reaction is disliked.
But human to human, face to face, waffling about yourself and not asking about the other person came across really odd.

Probably for the same reason that Donald Trump would never ask anyone how they were doing, even if he found them lying on a stretcher. If a person is self-absorbed, they won't see anything past their own self-interest.
For someone to NOT acknowledge you is actually a tremendous gift! You are being shown in that moment who they are, which you otherwise might never find out!
