Why would my dad react this way?

I was in the kitchen getting some coffee and he came in too, I smiled at him, and he immediately snapped at me "what are you smiling for?"

I didn't really how to respond so I kind of just chuckled awkwardly and said "I don't know, just good to see you I guess" and then he told me that was weird. I hurried the heck out of there after that.

I'm autistic so I don't process emotions or facial expressions well, kind of just left me confused. Is it weird to smile at people like that?

I have a daughter on the autism spectrum and she can frown or smile all she wants.
I don't find it really normal to get so upset about it.
It kind of sounds like he's projecting his own way of preceiving the world on you.
I sometimes do ask her if she's okay which I think irritates after the third time so I've tried to understand that her frowning doesn't have much to do with being upset.
Sometimes she does that when she's concentrating.

I don't know your dad but usually when someone reacts like that it's because something got them feeling defensive, and they go on interpreting everything as a personal attack, like a smile can appear to be "laughing at them". That's what it sounds like from my point of view although I don't know everything.

It wasn't your fault.

@SinlessOnslaught He's had anger issues over the years so maybe, thanks for saying that though <3

No, it isn't weird to be pleased to see someone or to smile at them. As a dad, I am usually happy to see my kids even though they are grown and on their own. If I find myself snapping or just being grumpy in general, a little self reflection will confirm it is something eating me, not the kids or grand kids..

Sounds like your dad is not an understanding person.

My heart melts when someone smiles at me. Especially my child. so his reaction is weird, but that's how a lot of people act when they're feeling weird about themselves.

I'm sorry you felt uncomfortable. He should of smiled back.
NO. NOT WEIRD AT ALL. A VERY NORMAL THING TO DO. Sounds like he has issues with himself, not you. I thought what he said to you was strange as if it's a crime to smile at people.
Seems he might be autistic too. It would make sense. Lots of traits are family traits and it might be how you got it.

@froggtongue I kind of suspect that. Ironically my parents don't think stuff like that exists 😑
@HorrorandMusic maybe you could stand your ground. Let your father and anybody else know that when they cross a line with that's not justly due, you're going to call them out on it and not take it. Or maybe that's not you and you're willing to let it slip. Either way try not to let it affect your own self.
HorrorandMusic · 26-30, FVIP
@froggtongue I appreciate that but literally everything affects me and I let everything slip.

Sounds like he was in a bad mood, there's nothing wrong with smiling at people.
HorrorandMusic · 26-30, FVIP
@MyNameIsHurl I hope that's it
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
@HorrorandMusic seems like it, you were just being nice and friendly

Not weird at all. You didn’t do anything wrong in this instance. Maybe he’s just in a bad mood

Idk he’s just snappy maybe.. you were fine 😳
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
Just ask him why he snapped at you.
HorrorandMusic · 26-30, FVIP
@JackDaniels You're confusing me with a normal person
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
@HorrorandMusic Sorry, you know him better than anyone here. Is this normal?
HorrorandMusic · 26-30, FVIP
@JackDaniels He can be a little temperamental.
He should not have snapped at you for that
