What's a tactful way to decline an invite from the in-laws for Christmas dinner ?

If you really do not want to go, then make a good reason. Like I am sorry, but we are starting our own new Christmas traditions. We will be staying home for Christmas. We are available on such and such a day. It is important to us. I am sure you will understand.

We always attended my parent's Christmas dinner if we were not working. And if we were, we came down the next day with all the food we prepared. Towards the end, it was the turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cheesecakes, etc. I never regretted this. I look back on those days fondly as my parents died years ago. My in-laws didn't have Christmas dinner for a long time. My mom-in-law was quite frail and ill.

You have to do what is right for you.
