EZ Cup filters for our coffee maker. I use cheap coffee instead of Keurig cups.

Cheap coffee? You're not a coffee connoisseur then?
exexec · 70-79, C
@swirlie Nope. I buy Community Coffee by the bag and use the plastic cup that fits our coffee maker. One cup a day is all I drink.

A friend of mine is a licensed buyer at coffee crop auctions around the world, who buys specifically for Starbucks Coffee. I can tell you that if you buy cheap coffee because you only drink one cup a day, you really aren't buying what's otherwise known as "coffee" at all. Why would you do that to yourself at this time in your life?

@swirlie I suppose I'm just a trusting soul and if it says it is 100% Arabica coffee, I believe it. It is a national brand, just lots cheaper than the fancier brands.

I'm not questioning your judgement when it comes to coffee, but I am questioning why you wouldn't treat yourself to the very best of everything in life at all times?

Let me give you a litmus test to take shopping with you. 100% Arabica coffee means, a very specific kind of coffee plant that is grown at or near the equator which collectively, are considered among the best coffee in the world.

However, not all Arabica coffee turns out the same, even when grown in the same field. Coffee plants which don't receive as much sun throughout their day because of the lay of the land for example (hilly land), will fetch a lower value at a coffee auction because of their lower taste quality due to a lack of sun/rain/dryness, etc.

When you buy 100% Arabica coffee, you are merely buying coffee that was produced at the equator. That is all that claim to fame guarantees to you as a consumer when you buy what's written on the package.

If you buy Community Coffee at a consistently very low price compared to the other brands of 100% Arabica coffee, it is because the coffee itself didn't pass the 'sniff test' at the coffee auction and therefore wasn't of high enough quality to be sold to 'higher end' coffee distributors who then pass that higher cost onto the consumer.

If you buy a brand of coffee that is consistently the highest price on the shelf and is a blend of coffee that you like (bold/medium/light) without being artificially flavored coffee, you will be buying the very best of the best in terms of coffee bean quality.

Flavored coffees by the way, are a method that is used to sell sub-standard coffee to the consumer while still being able to technically call the stuff "coffee".

@swirlie I don't treat myself to the "very best" because spending money on such things is not a priority for me. I drive a 21 year old Chevy truck. I could afford a new one, but I'm happy with the one that is paid for and runs great with only 140,000 miles on it. I could afford to buy new golf balls, but high quality used ones are only about a dollar each vs. $40 a dozen for new ones. I'm happy with the taste of my coffee. Is it as good as Starbucks? I don't know. I never had Starbucks.

Have you always had that outlook on life and what the world otherwise offers, or is this direction you've taken more about where you ended up in life for reasons not of your making?
exexec · 70-79, C
@swirlie When it comes to finance, I have always been frugal. There are exceptions. My wife and I went out to eat for our anniversary last evening. The meal cost more than our entire honeymoon, so I am capable of spending a lot of money on special occasions. You do not know where I ended up in life, so I would appreciate your not making judgments based on my taste in coffee.

@exexec
Where you ended up in life is living your life how you have chosen to live it. You either got that way from how you think, or you ended up that way from how you were otherwise influenced. For me to bring that to your attention as I've done is not making judgements about you based on your taste in coffee, but it is an acknowledgement from me that I empathize with the lifestyle you've chosen for yourself. That's not being subjectively judgmental on my part, but it is simply calling your chosen standard of living what it is regardless of the brand of coffee you don't drink.

@swirlie Okay, I accept that explanation.
