As a parent

I always thought it was important to give my kids their privacy as they got older. When we were teenagers my Mom used to go through all of our stuff and read our notes from friends and stuff like that. She also used to read my little sister's diary, like what the hell.

I can remember when my daughter was a teenager and she`d be on the phone in the basement my wife would lay on the floor and put her ear over the register and listen to her conversations. I`d be so pissed off when she did that.

@MyNameIsHurl My daughter is an only child.

@Degbeme I mean, I'm definitely not a perfect parent by any means, but that's just one of those respect things. I feel like I've raised them well enough to trust them

@MyNameIsHurl I`d never judge your parenting skills. You`ve done very well on your own. Much respect. 🤗

We allowed them to have their private space, but one of us always was awake when they came home late from a date or being out with friends. They had to check in. Both of them thanked us later because it gave them the excuse to avoid pressure to take risks with drugs or alcohol.

@exexec well yeah that's different, but going through someones diary or phone is messed up, unless I guess you know or suspect something terrible. If just rather talk to my kids

Yes, and to let them make as many as their own decisions as possible, while always being there to help them understand what happened when those decisions go wrong...
MyNameIsHurl · 46-50, F
@fun4us2b yeah for sure. I

@MyNameIsHurl Many people exert too much control - it does them no good.

Eh. If my parents were a bit more nosy I may have been just a bit safer
MyNameIsHurl · 46-50, F
@Madmonk well mine was intrusive and I was still smoking weed with gang bangers, so...

@Madmonk my parents being overly nosey drove me to unsafety as I'd avoid going back home

I can’t complain too much. When I was young, my parents were f’ing nuts about grades. Anything less than a B+ and I would’ve been grounded.

Otherwise, they were pretty trustworthy about everything else. We also lived in a separate wing of the house, so they weren’t intrusive there either. They’d just yell out or flick the lights if they wanted us.
My husband's mom is nosy too. We lived there for a year once and she was always looking through my stuff.
