Recently there was a patient admitted to the ICU who needed a few blood transfusions.

The son came to me distraught after several hours and told me there was no one available to donate blood. He already had donated the first bag to the patient and pleaded me to let him get another drawn. He could do anything to save his mama. I refused. He wouldn't be able to take care of her with a litre of blood flushed from his body. The night star sailed by. It was almost morning when he finally confessed that he had no one to contact for blood. They had no friends. No one that would help. I suggested he reach out on community groups on social media.... But he knew of none and did not have any social media whatsoever. He looked so anxious and helpless. I blinked twice before the consequences of the tragedy of a lonely dysfunctional family finally settled on me. This could be my siblings and I a few years from now. Hermits with no contact with the outside world.
Damn.

That is such a heartbreaking story. I hope it has a joyous ending
