Why do we still live in a society where boys are told "Real men don't cry?"

One of my foster fathers taught me to never cry,if i did he would say ok I'll give you something to cry about and then he would. If i cried when he hit me ,he'd hit me again . When i was able to take it and not cry he got even madder.
