If personal gun ownership was outlawed in the US what other weapon would you use to protect your home and your family ?

I don't need or want a gun. I don't want to be a part of the gun violence problem in America. If I had a real fear for my safety, I'd take up Martial arts and self defense classes first... and keep pepper spray,a baseball bat or crowbar or something handy.

Not sure how I'd feel about other weapons if I was in a wartorn country though. 🤔 I take protecting others seriously, so...

@Scribbles How do guns commit violence?

They are inanimate objects. They cannot commit an act of will
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@SW-User I've never been more concerned about the intelligence of someone before. I'm not sure what kind of argument you are trying to make? But congrats on identifying guns as inanimate objects! In case you didn't know... everybody else knew that already. 🙄🖕
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Scribbles that's a nice sentiment but none of that works when a gun is pointed at you from 20' away
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Scribbles you keep focusing on the guns and NOT the individual committing the crimes and that's what @SW-User was trying to point out
And that's the problem with this situation
We're so focused on removing guns and we don't see the bigger picture
GUNS are NOT the problem, PEOPLE are
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@pdockal It's a personal opinion of mine that whenever possible, I'm going to go for a nonlethal takedown. You don't have to like it. I also am aware of what my abilities and emotions are like in a violent situation. I quite frankly get too angry or too scared to have self discipline with gun. I would have no business holding a gun in those moments. I would only be killing someone else's child while in self defense or protective mode or I would be useless because I wouldn't have the will to point and use a gun to make any kind of stand. I'd like to get through life without killing someone or being useless in a fight if I can. both are actions I would regret.
I have to live with myself and use what I'm willing to wield. I know how to use a baseball and pepper spray and throw a couple punches through experience in real situations and stopped violence. I prefer those tools

I refuse to touch a gun or knife in self defense unless I'm very very desperate.

What do you mean none of it works? People in other countries do it all the time!

I've
had moments of talking someone down from wielding or pointing a gun, knife, a baseball bat at me or another. It can happen. Other people have survived being armless against an armed foe.

And like I mentioned...if I was in a wartorn country, I might feel differently idk.

I'd like to point out that there is nothing wrong with solving violence without a gun. Just as there is nothing wrong with self defence with a gun.

I just prefer the option of not killing someone. Don't most people?
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal So what's your answer? Oh I know, removing people.

BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT GUNS DO. THEY REMOVE PEOPLE. PERMANENTLY!
pdockal · 56-60, M
@room101 better mental health services, harsher penalties for criminals
Look at the statistics regarding gun control
The greater the fun control the higher gun crime (Chicagp)
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Scribbles if I'm armed they will think twice before they get violent as they are looking for easy targets and it's NOT using the gun but NOT appearing weak and an easy target
SW-User
@Scribbles you spewed gun violence so you are saying the gun commited violence. Since you obviously didn't they can't you had to jave it explained to you
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal Wonderful. You ask me to look at statistics. Here's one for you.

The UK has some of the strictest gun ownership laws on the planet. There have been four mass shootings in my lifetime. I'll repeat that in case you missed it:

THERE HAVE BEEN FOUR MASS SHOOTINGS IN MY LIFETIME!

Furthermore, the general police force is unarmed. I'll repeat that one as well:

THE GENERAL POLICE FORCE IS UNARMED!

Meanwhile, your law enforcement agencies (how many of them have you got? I lose count 'coz every time I think I know them all, another one pops up) where was I? Oh yeah, your law enforcement agencies are all armed to paramilitary levels.

I grew up, and lived, in some the roughest parts of North London. I'm white but, the vast majority of my friends are black. Because of this and because of where I lived, I've faced off against nutters wielding all manner of weapons. Knives, clubs, batons, and on two separate occasions, hatchets. All I've got to show for my erm.....troubles......is a small scar on my right hand. Had any of that been in a gun fetishising country like America, I'd probably not be here typing this.

I've travelled extensively, both for work and pleasure. The only countries that I've been to where ordinary citizens "need" easy access to guns are those which face the actual threat of armed invasion. America has not had any such threat since your so-called War of Independence.

FFS face reality. Look at other countries. Countries which have successfully legislated against gun ownership.

YOU DO NOT "NEED" GUNS!

@room101
i dont care 2 fucks about England .... they are the reason why we have the 2nd amendment ... ughhhhhhhhhhhhh
why does everybody think that guns are the problem
it takes a person to use it
cars kill many people and they are never listed as needed to be taken away
illegal drugs 9overdoses) and there isnt such an outcry as with guns
YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE MENTALITY OF LAW ABIDING CITIZENS WHO HAVE THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS because you were raised to be biased
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal You don't have to give two fucks about England genius. You just have to give a single fuck for your own people.

Yes, I was raised to be biased. Biased about the sanctity of life. Biased about the freedom to go about my daily life without fear of being shot. Biased about seeing police going about their duties without carrying guns. Biased about sending kids to school and not fearing if they're going to make it home.

Yeah, I'm fucking biased all right. I'm also not a gun fetishising sociopath.
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal One other little thing, when did England cause you to have your 2nd amendment drawn up?

Approx. 250 years ago right?

And you're still shitting your pants about it? You won right? Right?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@room101
anybody who has to say they arent a sociopath probably is !
if you understand history you will understand why the bill of rights was created in the first place
and why does everybody blame the guns and NOT the criminals ? Why cant law abiding citizens carry a gun?

@pdockal Oh wow. Are you trying to use reverse psychology or some such voodoo magic on me.

I'm blaming the people who carry guns. Be they criminals or ordinary citizens. It's weirdos like you who insists on distracting from the issue by alleging that we're blaming the gun not the person.

"Why cant law abiding citizens carry a gun?"

Because, in a civilised society, a law abiding citizen has no need, or cause, to carry a gun. It's a really simple concept. Just look at how other countries manage it. I know you got your knickers in a twist when I mentioned the UK (always seems to happen with you lot, no idea why).....so let's try somewhere else. I've been living in Spain for the last two years.

No guns anywhere. No mass shootings. No invading hordes. Nothing. Just a very pleasant, relatively peaceful lifestyle.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Scribbles stop and think for a minute about what you are saying. a weapon, any weapon be it a baseball bat or a semi-automatic rifle is still a weapon. it is difficult for me to understand how someone can claim one over the other. if you are willing to use a weapon to defend yourself, why not use the best one for the job? why not just have both and make that choice on an as need basis?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@room101 why do you always bring up why do i NEED to carry a gun ..... that has NOTHING to do with the issue
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE ISSUE!

The only purpose for a gun is to kill. Why would you want to own something whose only purpose is to kill?

A rational answer would revolve around need. It's even in the opening words of your much loved Second Amendment.

I've demonstrated that your perceived need is bogus. Ergo, there only remain irrational answers.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@room101 your a raving lunitic if you think the only purpose of the gun is to kill humans
im done with responding
good luck
room101 · 51-55, M
@pdockal You're done because you've got nothing that holds up to real scrutiny. And please, don't be so bloody obtuse. We all know that what's being discussed here are not proper hunting rifles etc.

@SW-User I didn't say that guns commit violence, I used the term "gun violence" they mean different things-just in case you never learned that. "Gun violence generally refers to violence and damage done by wielding a gun"

People use the term "gun violence" all the time in my country. Is it not a common term where you live?

I'm just puzzled why a person would think that term would mean that people think guns are sentient beings. That's just absurdity. No one thinks that. That is what I am pointing out, the absurdity of trying to twist a commonly used term to make a stupid and pointless comment. Unless it wasn't to twist a commonly used terms and you all just thought every newspaper and journalist thinks guns kill all by themselves everytime they say gun violence in a city has gone up. Lol

What a strange reality you must live in
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@GerOttman I am picking the best one based on my preferences for self defense (I explained a little bit above but I can expand upon it if you wish). I don't know how many violent situations you've been in...but in my experience if I had a gun I'd have only shot and killed people and regretted it later by choosing an easy and lethal solution that dehumanized the other person rather then using conflict resolution skills or intimidation or a weapon that has more shock value and does less damage. I simply don't want to carry a gun or point one at someone or shoot someone unless I'm beyond desperate and exhausted all other avenues. Full stop.

Don't I have a right to pick a less violent and less lethal way to defend myself? Why is strange that I don't want to point a gun at people every time I feel threatened? Jeez. Am I missing something?
SW-User
@Scribbles it's a deliberately misleading expression. Focuses on blaming the gun which is its intent
