Not Upset, Just Frustrated at Mom

I want to have in depth conversations about things like politics and morals with my mom but after the emotional and mental abuse she's gone through with her family and my dad, she doesn't see herself as smart. She didn't go to college but finished high school and started working so she could live on her own, but she's come so far and learned so much that school can't necessarily teach you. Because of these things she's sold herself short and not pursued further education (she's also pretty much raised my two bros and I herself). She's going to therapy and getting help for things, but I wish I just had someone in my family that was both sane and willing to have these kinds of conversations even if we don't know everything there is to know. I don't care if it gets a bit heated - the goal is to learn from one another and I feel like she's believed this externally-fed narrative that she's just a dumb working-class brown woman.

Maybe encourage your mom and she can still learn from you. Sounds like she's going through a lot indeed. We have no control over how others, family or not, choose to respond to discussions political or moral in nature. I agree, we can learn a lot from each other. Provided both parties are capable of truly listening to other's points of view as well as speaking their own. Sometimes with family it's difficult. I learned to accept folks as they are and adjust my own expectations accordingly.

My grandfather on my dad's side only had a 4th grade education. He had to work to help contribute to the welfare of the family until he went into the Navy during WW2. Yet, he was one of the smartest people I knew and I learned a lot from him as a kid. He too would put himself down because he never "got an education". But he lived comfortably as a blue-collar worker until he passed in retirement. We had many hours of philosophical and political discussions. He was a very practical man as well as smart.
