Yes, the spelling is such that 'spelling homework' is totally necessary for children. In most languages they are spelled the way they sound. English spelling is a mess.
Irish Gaelic? Anybody's guess. They put in all these extra letters and then it only sounds like 2-3 of them out of the 7 letters in the word.
