Was i supposed to drive faster?

I was once driving in a neighborhood at night and some cop started tailgating me so I sped up to 30mph on a road that had a speed limit of 25mph. He was still tailgating me so I sped up to 35mph. He was still tailgating me so I sped up to 40mph....to no surprise he was still tailgating me so I started getting nervous and I signaled to make a turn on some random area of the neighbourhood I had no intentions of visiting. He didn't have his lights on or anything. Would I have gotten in trouble for speeding if I sped up any further? Was he just trying to mess with me or something?

I would not have sped up but would have turned off like you did. He was likely running your plates.

He was trying to induce you to go faster so he could ticket you, I'd guess. That's how it usually goes, anyway. Turning off was smart, although I generally prefer to just park if feasible.

I would have just pulled over and let him pass. Turn on my hazard lights or something. But not speed up

@iamnikki: wow I could've totally done that. I wonder why I didn't think of that. I'll try that next time. Haha I thought he was like in a rush that's why I sped up.

@Christian: Definitely, some cops are horrible, had one run me off the road. He squeezed past me on the ramp to the highway.

It sounds like he was being a dick.😕 I wouldn't go faster though because then you could end up getting a ticket.

They do often do that to make you speed or because they're checking your plates. Cops that abuse their station really upset me.

I'd have "seen a cat on the road" or something similar and hit the brakes hard.
