My grandparents' pantry looked like that. Part of having lived through the Depression, I imagine. Some of my older uncles' homes were set up like that, too. I had to donate a lot of food recently, before it expired. It makes sense for large families, though.

That depression changed people for sure....americans never think we can run out of food...they learned differently. I did too during the blizzard of '78 here in Boston...walked to the supermarket, not allowed to drive, dragging a red wagon behind us in the snow to carry the groceries home...but there were NO groceries...empty shelves...a real eye opener. I'm always prepared now. ya never know
