If you're defending yourself, you don't have to hit back with the same force.

Like you probably shouldn't shoot someone just bc they punched you but you can knock 'em down. I sometimes -- not often -- see people say you have to hit back with the same force and it grinds my gears. You have to actually stop the threat and equal force doesn't do that.
