It's strange when people call others things like "narrow-minded" or "intolerant"

But they're not able to think at all about the other person perspective, just enjoy thinking that everyone is ignorant but them.
Or it's the same thing if you don't agree with them.
It's rare to find a person mature enough to be able to understand other perspectives without needing to insult, respect the other person even if they don't agree with it.

You can’t have an actual discussion with someone who immediately considers you the enemy because of your views. The problem is that there’s no real “marketplace of ideas”. It’s just everyone trying to one up the other because everyone is trying to “destroy our way of life”. We’re at the point where people who think and live differently than you are barely human.

Just look at SW: so many people just block rather than engage with an idea they don’t agree with (no matter how civilly and rationally it is communicated). A lot of it is fear: we’re afraid that our worldview might be the wrong one.

Are narrow-minded and intolerant bad?
There are so many ideas that I'm not open to. There are so many things which I think are bad which are supposed to fall under tolerance.

I don't like to get fights over it though, so I mostly keep quiet.

@Classified it's not about being bad, it's about not shoving your opinions as if they're the only valid ones.

@SW-User I meant that people use terms as 'narrow-minded' and 'intolerant' to make someone look bad and in such pushing an opinion. At times it can be true of course, but it feels like a weak and often angry argument.

God this is so true

Truth. I’ve met so many ‘openminded people’ that either openly or low-key think that everyone who doesn’t believe what they do is less enlightened/ignorant/brainwashed etc

@WhateverWorks yep very "open minded" 😁😁😁

Yeah, they just dehumanize anyone else cause that makes them feel like they don't have to consider what they have to say.

@Rolexeo too much ego

I agree with this. I don’t understand why people at least can’t be open and listen without throwing insults back.

I agree, it's running a mock in the USA and the westerner world. People here claim they are tolerant and open minded but then try to force their ideas on other people's culture. Which is basically ethnocentrism and the opposite of tolerance

All the time. There are all manner of word games used to turn being unable to be open to differing ideas into a virtue.
