People telling negative stories

How do you deal with people who always tell you like negative stories. I.E. about their friends who years ago passed away
And
I had an argument in the supermarket the other day
And
I just found out a friend of a friends cousin died of cancer leaving 3 children
And
My friends dog knocked over my China whatever. It was really expensive and now it's smashed

In a summary every time they see you.
Would you ask "do you have anything cheerful to tell me?"
I don't like to say it but I feel it.

Depends on how close your friendship is with this person. If they are a casual acquaintance then you can ignore them. If they ask why you are ignoring them, politely tell them the truth offline somewhere... "Look, I think you are a nice person but honestly, not sure if you realize it, every time you talk it's about a negative occurrence. I'd be anxious to hear something exciting or positive that happened..." with a smile of course. If they are humble they might not like to hear it but may act on it and change. If they are a prideful fool, they'll get indignant and walk away in a huff.

Other folks may have better ideas, but that's what I'd consider doing if I were in your shoes.

If it’s a habitual negativity/complaining then I give them short responses, “ yeah, that’s unfortunate“ then change topic to something positive. I continue to do this unwaveringly. Eventually they get the message then I’m not going to join in the negativities.
i know what you mean ❤️
