Hey car people...how long can a vehicle survive with an oil burning issue?

On my way home from work yesterday, I was driving behind an old and tired early 2000's Chevy Malibu that was belching blue smoke, which is a sign that it had an oil burning problem.

I drove my old car for about 12 months with the same issue. They had to keep cleaning the leaking oil off as it stank. Finally the smoke starting pluming out of the exhaust and it died a miserable death. It’s the 3rd car I’ve killed from my inability to put the correct amount of oil in a car
@GLITTER My parents had an old minivan years ago which did that, although they didn't want to deal with the problem and just decided to sell the van to a junkyard shortly after it started...lol.

@latinbutterfly I did that with my first car, my mechanic was like you either need to sell it now or face it blowing up on you
