What would you think about your government banning the sale of alcohol and cigarettes during lockdown ?

My government here in South Africa has done this during our 3 week lockdown which started last Thurday.
I think a lot of addicts are going to be quite furious.
The government's reasons are as follows :
- Drinking and smoking weakens your immune system.
- It's also an attempt at reducing domestic violence caused by cabin fever.
- Being drunk reduces people's ability to be socially distant.
- The use of liquor “reduces a person’s ability to exercise the social distancing and personal hygiene required” to limit the spread of the virus from person to person.

I foresee many people breaking the law in order to get their fix. What do you think ?

Wraithorn, I am sure there is some or other Shebeen still doing business. We both know the townships cannot be policed entirely. On the upside, a friend who works in casualties says the trauma cases are way down. On the downside, given our domestic violence problem/rape problem in South Africa, let us hope that after lockdown we won't see a rise in stats where that is concerned. Time will tell. Yes, he did leave it to Bheki Cele to announce.. clever move.

@Lochlee It's a complicated situation isn't it ? If trauma injuries are less then that's good. Let's see where we are in a couple of weeks time. Interesting times we are living in right now...

@Wraithorn It is very strange. Let us hope this in not the spark in gunpowder and that we can pick up the pieces when lockdown ends, knowing that is when the second battle begins. But, yes, traumas are down because so many injuries and murders are caused by drunken brawls. So perhaps they said NONE (alcohol), knowing full well there would be SOME (Ramaphosa using some of the skills he learnt in his NUM days) 🙂. Time will tell.
