The camps that are in the news lately aren't actually for illegal immigrants, they're for asylum seekers.
But the whole thing is a pretty complicated question, there isn't really a neat solution. Even if you open up immigration to sensible levels, you'll still need to vet and process the people that show up to the border and ask for asylum. That some sort of detention will take place isn't even really avoidable. The big questions are about the manner of said detention and its actual purpose (ie: is it punitive?).
And becoming a citizen is a long process that requires 5+ years of legal residency. That particular situation is years ahead of the issues we're talking about.
