There could be a number of reasons.
The parents could need medical care that the adult offspring could not provide.
There may be no one in the person's home that can look after/take care of the parents on a day to day basis.
Cost, a seemingly cold hearted statement, but factual. Many people cannot afford a place large enough to house the parents, themselves, and their own children.
My grandparents put themselves into a nursing home as they wanted to be a burden on no one and they wanted to make their own decisions on the matter.
