Lousy
I am a walking talking machine ... can talk 15 seconds or 4 hours ... with the same composure.
For me ... I break everything into a short outline of logical progression.
That way I do not need notes.
I know what I am saying
Why I am saying it.
What the impact is likely to be.
And why I should be the one to say it.
It is easy.

@questionWeaver snap! Easy peasy 😊

Being a card-carrying introvert, I do not like public speaking. I have found, however, that it is not so bad if you are prepared.
Several years ago, I had to give a speech at my brother's wedding. I was not looking forward to it, but I prepared and practiced. When the day came, I was fine...and even received many compliments.

@sciguy18 practice is the key, I keep hearing that. Maybe I’m not practicing enough. Thanks for your comment, I just saw it!
Fernie · F
As long as I got a laugh or two out of the audience in the beginning it went well. It's hard for just about everyone.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Fernie Laughs are definitely good stuff
Fernie · F
@Fallflower It's true...they'll forgive you for anything if you make them laugh
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
It's one of my strengths. Just don't ask me to sing.

@Harmonium1923 Maybe a duet? 🙃😊😀
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
What if I play piano and you do the singing? 🎹
@Harmonium1923 Ok then 😀 !
I don't sing either but just give me a shot of wine and I am good to go.
I'll even do some modern interpretative dance. 🌈💃🏻🎼

If I am confident, I am not horrible. But I know what you mean about the nerves. I got 'em ;)
Maybe if you practiced in front of your people before hand?

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON sometimes though I don’t even feel nervous. But I sound nervous! It’s so embarrassing.
@Fallflower Are you SURE you sound nervous?
Every person has a different voice range pitch etc.
Maybe you are being too hard on yourself.
I bet YOU care way more than your audience.
So, just take it easy on yourself :)

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON i definitely care more 😌 but I know what I sound like!!

SW-User
It doesn't make me nervous, but I'm boring. I can't hold an audience's attention.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@SW-User that’s cool that it doesn’t make you nervous.
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
The more you do it the easier it gets 😉
Ironicman · 56-60, M
My peers tell me I'm good at it but I hate doing it and obsess about it days before hand. I'm sure it's not healthy feeling the way we do. There should be a term for the phobia. How about presentationobia
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Ironicman yes to presentophobia. Take comfort in that your peers appreciate your stuff 😎

SW-User
Its just practice and confidence about your subject mostly. I'm okay, not brilliant just ok, or i used to be, been a while.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@SW-User I guess the more I do it, the more I’ll remember to breathe 😋

SW-User
i always talk myself into thinking this time i will be better at it, but then i shut down, every time.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@SW-User I feel ya!!

SW-User
@Fallflower ikr?!
summersong · F
I’m pretty good at it, actually. It’s not my favorite thing to do though.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@summersong lucky duck 🙂
exexec · 70-79, C
People keep asking me to do it, so I guess I'm okay. I've done a lot of it.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@exexec you must be decent at it 😏
BridgeOvertroubledWaters · 61-69, M
I manage ok , though I have to practice alone beforehand.

SW-User
I have no problem as long as I’m well informed on what I speak on. 🙂
Datdudeblack · 36-40, M
i either talk too fast or mumble and stumble on my words
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Datdudeblack yeah, slowing down is a challenge for me too
Mondayschild · F
I kinda like it and have no problem
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Mondayschild that is so cool 🙂

SW-User
Pretty terrible. I forget to breathe. I'll know the information but my mind has the tendency to totally go blank. It doesn't even need to be a crowd....get more than just a couple people paying attention to me and I act like a freak, lol.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@SW-User that’s exactly what happens to me. Even if it’s a subject I’m comfortable with! The lack of oxygen is is what makes my voice shake 🙄

SW-User
@Fallflower I know the struggle. Luckily the times I’ve done it I’ve managed without passing out lol.

SW-User
I haven't done much, but I'm pretty bad at it
Experienced33 · M
Same
JavaJoe · 51-55, M
I’m actually pretty okay at it. I’ve had communication courses and pretty much got comfortable talking in front of groups.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@JavaJoe you lucky bastard.
JavaJoe · 51-55, M
@Fallflower that’s me. ;)
HannibalMontanimal · 26-30, M
Horrible. Nervous. Self conscious.
Batman · 41-45, M
not good at all
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
Hi you say it's mind over matter but I think for some it might be your body taking control. I was exactly like you until a number of years ago when my pituitary gland failed. Since then I have been very relaxed about public speaking.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@MrAverage1965 wait so if I remove my pituitary gland I can be a Ted talker?
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
Exactly but it's not recommended. It controls the production of many hormones throughout the body, including growth hormone and testosterone, in men. It also controls the liver and thyroid gland too.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@MrAverage1965 yeah it sounds like an important gland
rfhh1959 · 61-69, M
Seeing that is a huge part of how I make my living really good
SweetMae · 70-79, F
I don't do well at all. I do better at speaking than singing though.
passiond · M
presentations: you must PRACTICE at these! And work from a real outline. No one is a natural, not one you'd want to listen to anyway. I am a great speaker ~ Unless I didn't practice the heck out of my speech, presentation, briefing - whichever

SW-User
I love it!
PhoenixPhail · M
Factually, more people are afraid of public speaking than they are of death. I used to be terrified of it. I still don't like it, but I'm getting over the fear as I'm learning to not give a shit what people think of me.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@PhoenixPhail Yeah, me too.
PhoenixPhail · M
@Fallflower Good for you!
BridgeOvertroubledWaters · 61-69, M
I do ok.
I stick to the triple S rule.
Stand up
Speak up
Shut up
😊

@BridgeOvertroubledWaters good rules! I will try to remember.
BridgeOvertroubledWaters · 61-69, M
@Fallflower Do you have to do it often ?
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters not often but anytime is one time too many for me. I just have to suck it up. I’ve gotten better.
