how do you overcome social awkwardness??

i like this guy, and there is a dance this weekend, i would really like to ask him. but whenever i'm around him i never know what to say because i don't want to sound extremely strange. he's a year ahead of me in school so rejection wold be super embarrassing. i'm thinking of making a card and giving it to him, or would that be more weird?? help!

I've been there plenty of times before.. Ok, so what I would do is just try to start a conversation about something you can both relate to. Then ask him if he's planning on going. If he says yes, ask him if he would like to go with you. If he says no, still ask. Either way, if you don't ask, you'll never know. It's too good of an opportunity to miss.
