how do you overcome social awkwardness??

i like this guy, and there is a dance this weekend, i would really like to ask him. but whenever i'm around him i never know what to say because i don't want to sound extremely strange. he's a year ahead of me in school so rejection wold be super embarrassing. i'm thinking of making a card and giving it to him, or would that be more weird?? help!
