Dreams Under the Lily Pad

I dreamt I was a tadpole
Just swimming in a pond
I had no worries nor no cares
I just thought to swim along
I grew me some legs and feet
And thought I’d try them out
Soon I took my first leap
And landed in some doubt
I wondered why I left that pond
To hop along the sand
I doubted I had a choice in it
Or would know just where I’d land
The funny thing about it all
Was I still wanted to swim
But with the legs and feet I had
I just hopped with every whim
It didn’t take me long to see
That the land was filled with dangers
Every hop taken by my feet
Landed me in front of strangers
Some were kind but most were not
There were more than a few snakes
As I hopped away from my pond
Looking for a lake
I hopped and hopped, I jumped around
Learning as I went
And in the end of it all
I felt like I was spent
There was no magic kiss for me
There was little that made sense
Just me, a little frog
That would never be a prince.
And with the sunrise I awoke
And I headed off to start my day
Went to work and made my pay
And came home again to lay
I hoped to dream another dream
But it started just like it had
Just a tadpole in a tiny pond
Beneath a lily pad.
