When you were growing up, did your parents routinely have "before dinner drinks"?

My parents did not, although they sometimes had them when we went to a restaurant.
My wife's parents did this at just about every dinner.

This sometimes led to an awkward conflict of expectations at extended family gatherings.

No. My parents only drank alcoholic beverages when they were entertaining friends who drank. They served drinks with hors d'oeuvres, and made sure there was plenty to eat.

@4meAndyou It was the same at our house. And now that I think about it, I seem to recall that they would only have one bottle. If guests wanted something other than whiskey, they were out of luck!

@DrWatson My parents kept various alcoholic beverages in stock...but my mother always HID them where a casual observer would never see them.

@4meAndyou Years ago, when my sister and her boyfriend visited my parents and announced their engagement, my father said that the occasion called for a drink.

The Seagrams bottle had a thick layer of dust! 😂
