Remember when...?

candy bars were 8 inches long and cost $1.
When a gallon of gas was under $1
helenS · 36-40, F
I remember exactly one thing that was 8 inches long, and it was free. 😏
@helenS most of the time it is free...but i feel like i was paying for it afterwards
@helenS too late
helenS · 36-40, F
@LILY61 Yes that's true. Most things come at a price 😐
Ontheroad · M
Try 23 cents a gallon and candy bars were, depending on size, a nickel, a dime or a quarter.
Ontheroad · M
@OlderSometimesWiser nah, people were the fuel for the family ride.
@Ontheroad wow...when was that?
Ontheroad · M
@LILY61 mid 60s, California. Prices ranged up to an average of 31 cents depending on where you lived.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Well the economic system is designed around the idea that every company's revenue must grow every trimester. At some point, price gouging becomes necessary to sustain that. We're there.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
I grew up with a different currency. Not $.
But yes, fuel is 200 times costlier today.
It was INR 5 for a litre of petrol when I first started buying for my bike in 1980. It’s INR 103 now!!
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@WandererTony Surprisingly I think if I convert your currency to mine(Singapore dollars) the pumps prices are about the same. Do you lot get any fuel subsidies? I know India has a fairly robust petro industry

Heck, I think some of it is refined here before going onwards.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
@Longpatrol nope. No subsidies now. It was subsidised earlier. India is a net importer of oil. One of its major imports
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@WandererTony ahh. Import costs explains it.
When was gas 1 $?

@LILY61 Oh sorry, you meant $1 per gallon. My brain wasn't working, lol.
@LILY61 hmm I see
remember when babysitting was minimum wage?

When McDonalds food tasted good? the fries were phenomenal and the Mc Rib was also 8 inches...and tasted better.

when the ice cream man came to your street?
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@LILY61 The ice cream man still comes to most streets in the UK .... Mr Whippy

@helenS ours always played some insipid version of some insipid tune
@MrAverage1965 i first heard of Mr Whippy on that show...Episodes
So much shrinkage these days!

fun4us2b · M
I worked in a Shell Station during HS and gas was 57.9 cents per gallon, and I remember every one complaining how it used to be 35 cents and some people saying a dime a gallon!
@fun4us2b it is official! when you start complaining about the price of gas and how little it used to be...you're old😄
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Yes. And that was when I thought a yearly salary of $10,000 would be wonderful.
@ChipmunkErnie and a decent car was $3000 and a decent home was $20,000.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@LILY61 Or less.
Shadyglow · F
When I was in middle school they were twenty five cents.
@Shadyglow what decade was that?
Shadyglow · F
@LILY61 ummmm time for breakfast.

TY

actually I think I'm wrong, I was sentient when a big three musketeers was a NICKEL

My point being that inflation is not NATURAL and people should really be fighting mad about it!!!!!
@Shadyglow i know. the farmers raise prices cause their taxes go up and the price of grain and land etc...go up and then by the time it gets to us...it is 6 dollars for two tomatoes and milk is 5 dollars per gallon. i stopped giving away Halloween candy and decorating
RockerDad · M
I remember them being 25 cents.
@RockerDad the really big candy bars were just under a $1 and the small ones were 35 cents...that is what i remember.

...you mean in 1973 before the OPEC action?
@SomeMichGuy oil meant nothing to me until '78
@LILY61 In lower Michigan, gas bounced between $0.369 & $0.399 per gallon in 1973, then it blew past $1.

The town in which I'd grown up, where almost all the major employers were either suppliers for the American auto industry or shops which supported those suppliers, was completely devastated, with many people laud off, wages staying flat for those employed...

The stupidity of American car execs who'd gone to business schools but NEVER considered the basic assumptions of their industry were caught flat-footed and it destroyed a whole sector of the economy.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I remember riding my motorcycle out to the local gas station as a kid and filling up for $0.26 cents a gallon and thinking that was expensive. It would cost me $0.35 cents if my tank was on empty.
@Musicman i feel like i need to take out a loan to fill a gas tank now.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@LILY61 I know. 💔😢😢😢
