Benefit of being cautious

So i started a new relationship with a good person...however he is opposed to a long term commitment. I worry if this communication will last beyond his hello and good vibes.
He is nice, polite, kind, and caring, but otger than actions of not spending time with me, his words are all i have. Im cautious because hes handsome, yet analytically upsetting. He wants me as his gf but tells his friends im " dating" her for now...um..what EXACTLY does that mean..the for now part?
Dating to me is dinner, a movie, a long conversation while walking on a beach or in a park..holding-hands and kissing...but, he seems to avoid everything i just mention.
He calls, he SAYS im cute or gorgeously adorable, but if you want me to be yours, why not visit me ortalk to me in person? One Saturday a month he plans a date to tge mall where he eats, shops, then has given a hug. We been talking so long ive got nothing left to say or explore..so on side of caution, i am testing tge waters today, not calling or texting, not acknowledging anything for 24 hrs..just to see if he really does care or if its just words...
