Well he’s probably the most popular music artist in the world right now. So lots of people will tune in to see just him

And they get the publicity of right wingers being outraged

It’s not really a “political” decision as much as it is a business one

Also if by “politics ruining entertainment” you mean “making racists mad” then that is a good thing

It’s so pathetic that having to see someone sing in another language is an issue for people, that’s a them problem and a deficiency of character
Penny · 46-50, F
@EBSVC hes so popular ive never heard of him besides a name maybe three or four times. so my character is deficient in what? would you say the same thing if it was like one of the kpop bands who dont speak english? (i think there might be some not sure) and politics ruining entertainment means to draw attention to sensitive topics involving the national guard and people supposedly going to "concentration camps" its not about race, not to me at least .its about the traditional norms of the US and the people's expectations. (who arent so liberal or spanish speaking.)
EBSVC · 36-40, T
@Penny OK
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
@EBSVC And here I thought Taylor Swift is currently the most popular singer

The US insists on keeping Puerto Rico. Bad Bunny is as American as you!
Bumbles · 56-60, M
@Bumbles thanks for the BC!
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
He's:

- A popular performer
- A US citizen (Puerto Rico is a US Protectorate)

The US has no official language.
The NFL has many Latino players and fans.

I keep hearing it's not racism, but why is every aspect of US Latino culture being attacked?
Penny · 46-50, F
@basilfawlty89 idk if i believe this. ai didnt say it and they didnt teachit in school so if teh national archives werent shut down id cry bullshit but cant say for sure

I love him, don't understand why people are so upset about it, his music is amazing.. I actually listened to him earlier while I was cleaning (dancing)🥹
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@Penny Mostly yes
Neoerectus · M
@Cassieeee I can only assume racism/ethnicism that offends those who espouse knee-jerk nationalism.
Cassieeee · 31-35, F
@Neoerectus I feel like people that are upset don't know how to enjoy music (and dance)..
joe438 · 61-69, M
I had never heard of the guy before this, and politics aside, why would the NFL choose halftime entertainment only in Spanish? That just seems like the NFL wants people to change the channel during halftime, and it can't be good for ad sales.

Give the wide appeal of the halftime show (wider than the game) I'm shocked they didn't find someone who performed in English, or maybe English/Spanish if that's important, and could avoid world politics even if they're known for being opinionated. We watch the show to smile and tap our feet or clap/sing along.

I had never heard of him either. Yet, according to
https://chartmasters.org/spotify-most-streamed-albums/
Bad Bunny had the top streaming albums of 2020, 2022, and 2023, and the most streamed album ever. So by that measure he was overdue for recognition.
joe438 · 61-69, M
@ElwoodBlues sure, numbers don’t lie but that doesn’t make his music pleasant to listen to. I found a recording online after the story broke and I won’t be wasting my time watching the halftime show. I suppose someone will tune in just then to only watch him and not waste time watching the game…
WormMan · 56-60, M
I've never heard of him before this, but if you are not a fan, don't watch, talk to your friends or family or watch the Puppy Bowl like @ChipmunkErnie said
theweekdy · 22-25, M
These big shows are planned well in advance. Artists are invited and confirmed months or even a year before the event. This means the decision is made long before anyone could predict the political or social climate. Once it is confirmed, it is not something they can just walk away from because of contracts, sponsors, teams, and extensive rehearsals.

Performers are chosen based on streaming numbers, chart success, brand, relevance, and reach. Even if another singer is technically “better,” organizers focus on achievements and connections with audiences.

Performances are created specifically for that night and take months to prepare. Choreography, staging, and production are all carefully planned. It is very unlikely that a performance of that size is a last minute political stunt

Basically, in the U.S. the 1 st Amendment was INTENDED to guarantee freedom of expression (of all - not just those in power) limited only by not espousing violence, overthrowing (treason), or similar actions ...

No idea, never actually heard his music -- we usually watch the ANIMAL PLANET PUPPY BOWL during halftime, anyway.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@ChipmunkErnie Just checked him out on Youtube -- boring to me, but not offensive that I could hear/see.

Anything that upsets MAGA, I fully support. 😅
Spacetripper · 61-69, F
@chrisCA *magabichos*
Lmao It isn't a debacle. It isn't politics, it's marketing.

This isn't religion. And it's a private space (the entertainment is owned by the pro league).

Why do you think they need to ask you who does that?
Penny · 46-50, F
@SomeMichGuy i never said they needed my approval. i was just lamenting that the superbowl (an entertainment source) is being used to draw attention to a problem that the US is facing instead of just letting us like be happy and ignore the issue lol. yes, apathy at its finest

Does it really matter?

Penny · 46-50, F
@SomeMichGuy neither. im saying, why do they need to make a political statement with their choice of singers. im thinking its a political statement if he only sings in spanish. if he sang english and spanish it wouldnt be a big deal id think. all while people are getting deported and political unrest regarding iCE... not a political statement???
Like2play · M
@Penny isn’t he from Puerto Rico?
It's football. Who cares if the halftime show has lyrics in Spanish. It's still the halftime show for football.
MaBalzEsHari · 36-40, M
You might want to look at his awards in the last 2 years............and look at where his music is on the charts.. Your racism is showing.
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
@SomeMichGuy The radio station I listen to is mostly classical (plus a bit of jazz, opera, and ragtime); so I haven't heard whatever BadBunny is on the radio either. BUT other radio stations do play other things...and those other things tend to be the ones being performed in stadiums...
@Penny I'm older than you, but I'm aware that there is a lot of non-English media...
@thisguy20 Exactly.

I mostly listen to and play classical music.

And I'm far more interested in Playboy Bunnies and real bunnies than Bad Bunny, bit I heard of him long ago.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
At this point it would be less divisive to have Taylor Swift perform.
Penny · 46-50, F
@AuRevoir ugh lol
Thrust · 56-60, M

What could be more woke?

@OriginalNedKelly the half-time show is the only reason i watch the superbowl.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
@Penny Approximately 200M people worldwide watch the Super Bowl. About half of them watch for the same reason you watch.
