I Feel So Alone

When boarding a ferry at Rosslare, passengers, myself being one of them, were warned that the weather was so bad that the crossing to Fishguard might have to be postponed overnight. There was a lot of grumbling. Anyway, someone in authority decided that the risk was worth it.

The majority of us sat in the bar, but I quite liked the way the vessel was rolling so I went up on deck and stood at the rail, luxuriating in the wind and seaspray. I moved away when I realised that everyone else taking the breeze was puking over the side. So, reluctantly I joined the majority in the saloon.

One by one, people got up and left, abandoning their whiskey, their gin and tonic, their pints of Guinness. Eventually i realised I had the whole place to myself. There were hundreds (or maybe only scores) of passengers, and I was the only one to be unaffected by seasickness. I mean, I was affected, but not the same way. I felt left out of a community experience.

Ironically, upon disembarking at Fishguard, I felt wretched because i'd finished off my sisters' drinks rather quickly. Pity to pay and waste. Didn't even get the chance to get properly drunk. Blurgh

My Great Uncle crossed the Atlantic during WWII and was the only one that did not get sick. Even more coincidental, he hated herons.

@goliathtree that's amazing! Do you think we're related? Methinks there can't be too many people with that exact pair of genetically endowed characteristics

@damselfly do you like to build raccoon traps?

@goliathtree yes, I'm certain I would, although more in a supervisory capacity than hands-on. (I get on people's nerves far less when I keep my hands in my pockets)

(But that would be more on my mother's side, I think)
