Some things were different though. I did some math, and because some goods have changed relative value over time, and other factors, $1 in 1950 is worth between $8 and $60 of todays money, measuring in at about $18 on average. Which means that back then, you actually might be able to support a family with minimum wage.

@Xuan12: I would agree with this point as to household income.
However, I would agree with the OP in that there has been a general upward swing in basic human rights in the US since the Great Depression WWII era. It's not a straight upward line. There are dips over a few years.
