I hate when people act passive-aggressive

A girl at the gym smiled directly at me, waved, and asked me how I was. It caught me off-guard because I don't know her and I probably stared at her trying to process why she was acting like she knows me. I'm not sure but I think I mumbled, "fine, how are you?" She was doing stretches or something, so I just walked by. Hopefully, I smiled back at her, but I don't know for sure. It's hard to keep track of facial expressions.

I think maybe she thinks I was someone she knows so it would seem deceptive if I just played along. Still, I feel unsettled by the entire encounter. And for some reason, I think maybe I should have been more "open," I guess you could say, to her greeting. But it seems like if she really wanted to talk to me, then she should have been more assertive with her intentions. It's a wonder why she wasn't.

This isn't social anxiety, not by a long shot. But it would be nice if I was better able to know how to respond in circumstances like this.

No offense, but my opinion is you overthink things. 👍
