Amazing how the minds of the well-to-do work

I live in a remodeled motel built in the 50s. I like it. But sometimes I wonder.

In the last month, the owner raised the rent $25, the eighth time it has increased since I moved in. The same month, the free laundry with washers and dryers was transformed into a coin-operated laundry. It costs roughly $6 to wash and dry a load of laundry.

The folks who own this complex own two more properties in this city.

None of that is terribly surprising.

But yesterday a box of random groceries appeared on my porch. I thought it was mis-delivered. Today I asked a neighbor if they knew whose it might be.

They told me it was a gift from the owners, trying to help everybody out.

It contains 4 tortillas in a ziploc, with turkey or chicken slices cut into slivers. Two cans of Vienna sausage. Two packs of Ramen noodles. A boxed cake mix. A can of ground pepper. 3 small cans of tuna. All are generic brands.

Well, that will definitely heal the $31 monthly wound to our wallets. NOT driving their Cadillac Escalade around the complex might help even more.

That’s certainly bizarre.

Sounds like something that would happen on Schitt’s Creek. 😅

@OlderSometimesWiser That’s exactly what I thought. Clearance sale at Dollar General.
@Mamapolo2016 Better check the expiration dates on the rest of the stuff, don’t want to end up doing extended time on the bowl. Especially if they turn it into a pay toilet.
@OlderSometimesWiser That’s gotta be next.

Depends on whether they own the aparments outright or have a mortgage on the properties taxes and insurance go up so may be trying to cover their cost too. Rent is outrageous everywhere the old thought is I will find something cheaper isnt true anymore!
@Likestoenjoylife I’m sure they are covering their expenses. That’s not the point about the box. $10 toward next month’s rent would be far more helpful.

This is already the most affordable livable place here.

@Mamapolo2016 I am not downplaying your plight its tough for people when they get prices raised on them $25 to some people is devastating and hurts so not telling you to like it.
@Likestoenjoylife No offense taken. It’s more the threat than the food box.

Can you anonymously make them a nice little food hamper? Put in things like:
Out of date dented/rusting can of beans
A toilet roll with a few sheets left on it
Old teatowel
A bitten-into cookie etc
@meggie You have a mean streak. I admire that. 🤩
Was she clearing out her kitchen cupboards or something, that's a strange lot of groceries to gift someone 🙄
@AbsolutelyFabulous I’m reasonably sure she doesn’t clean her own cupboards.
@Mamapolo2016 well lucky her I guess. I hope you can enjoy some of those things
It doesn't seem like much compensation, to me.
@PhoenixPhail I don’t wanna look a gift horse in the
mouth. I know there are people who would consider it a fount of blessings, however temporary.

I forgot there was a 16 oz can of refried beans, too. Which might be more dangerous to me than the fresh air chicken.
No beer, I would be angry... 😉

A 1950s motel building sounds interesting!
