I don't understand how people can spend so much time going on and on about some drama-filled event they have constructed in their life...

An obnoxious know-it-all at work was going on and on about how some project she is working on may be cut after she was asked to join it. I got on my phone as she was talking to a group of us and you would have thought I called her a flat-chested b*tch to her face. She finally stopped talking for a second and then started yelling... literally yelling... at me at how self-absorbed I was for not listening to her every word and called me unprofessional. This is someone who requires constant attention and careful handling at all times.

I had no idea what to say to her and just told her to stop yelling. She insisted she wasn't yelling. Maybe she wasn't, but it sure seemed like she was. I don't think this is an example of not being able to pick up on basic social cues. So, her project might (MIGHT) get cancelled. I didn't feel like listening to her go on and on, so I started reading on my phone. Maybe it wasn't the politest thing to do, but if she was yelling (and it seemed like she was), that was just an unnecessary thing to do. No one else seemed to have a problem with what she was saying or what I was doing, so I don't know...

@MarkPaul No, I'm not being sarcastic. I'm seriously wondering how you end up in situations like this so often.

@Tumbleweed Oh. Yeah, I don't know.
@MarkPaul This is what the World's Foremost Authority has to say . . .

Was This a Basic Social Situation?

Yes, in the sense that it revolved around group interaction, unspoken expectations, and managing different personalities. However, it also involved a nuanced dynamic:

Her reaction suggests sensitivity to perceived slights.

Your action (checking your phone) could be seen as socially disengaged, even if not meant to be disrespectful.

The group’s lack of intervention may indicate indifference or avoidance.
