Just what is it in the human condition that announcing a distressing event should attract such cowardly stupidity and cruelty?

@AuRevoir That's not how it read but I agree the responses were meant as "jokes". Sick ones.
Of course there is a time and place for "black humour"; but that is among people who know each other in the same situations.
