Death is one of life's certainties that we can't change. I tend to not think about it too much.
For me, earthquakes are very scary. You never know how hard they're going to be, and how much they'll destroy.

@rottenrobi Yes. That’s what’s always been different from disasters in other parts of the country. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods—they’re terrifying and more frequent, but you know when they’re coming and there’s a certain amount of preparation. But with earthquakes, you don’t know until it’s happening. And you don’t know how bad until it’s over.

@bijouxbroussard The older I get, the more uncomfortable they are. I will never get used to them. You're so right, we don't get any notice! It doesn't help that I worked for geologist for a couple of years. He always talked about a certain "big one" that is inevitable. I hope I won't be around for anything close to that.

@bijouxbroussard @rottenrobi I was 9 years old when we had the Southeast Michigan tornado outbreak of 1997. I remember watching The Weather Channel and wondering what the heck was happening and if I was about to die.

@Rose0415 That’s so scary. Did you have a shelter where you could go ? In college I remember a tornado warning serious enough that we were all sent to the shelters underneath our dorms. In that case, the tornado itself missed our area altogether.

@Rose0415 I can't imagine how scary a tornado is. Even though you do get a warning, you still can't escape it. I've read they are so loud and everything on your house shakes.... it must be terrifying.
Rose0415 · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard Yeah, luckily the house that I grew up in had a basement and we went down there briefly just to be safe, because a tornado did touch down just several miles from my hometown. Thankfully it didn't hit us.

@rottenrobi I've heard that it either sounds like a freight train, or a jet plane taking off.
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@Rose0415 Wow, that is unnerving, for sure! Events like these make you feel so small and at the mercy of mother nature. Not a comfortable feeling at all.
Rose0415 · 36-40, F
@rottenrobi Yep. I love nature but not when it could possibly kill me 😂.
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@Rose0415 Lol. exactly.

@rottenrobi Were you here during Loma Prieta ? I remember thinking “okay, you can stop now”—because it seemed to go on forever, even though it was supposedly only a few seconds. My housemate was reciting the entire rosary !
rottenrobi · 56-60, F
@bijouxbroussard 15 harrowing seconds... it felt like forever! I think your roommate reciting the rosary would've made it even more surreal. Lol. I kept saying the same thing, please stop. It always makes me feel so very small, and helpless.

@Rose0415 Lol, I definitely understand that. I prefer benevolent nature too. 🙂

@rottenrobi Omigod, yes !
