Patriarchy.

@CountScrofula I had a sort of patriarchal upbringing but it hasn't stopped me from expressing myself the way I'm meant to be.

@Crazychick By patriarchy I mean the overall way society functions. I'm sure you've had people in your life imply you should be demure and sweet rather than assertive. Even if you told them to screw off that social pressure for men and women to act certain ways exists for almost everyone .

@CountScrofula The "social pressure for men and women to act certain ways" hasn't existed in my part of the city since before I was born. Before my parents were born, even. The Sisterhood was actually founded in 1954, so that's how long we've been advocating for equality here.

@CountScrofula yeah, I was told I should be speaking in a soft, sweet voice to men. But I don't care. Fortunately, my fiance hates it too. He said he liked the way I talk to people boldly.

@Crazychick That's very cool!

@JBird Right exactly. So women are told to be demure, men are told to demand that women are demure. A lot of people ignore that, but a lot of people don't. So you end up with men who can't handle assertive women.
