What age did you first buy a car yourself, with your own finances?

I believe for me it was in May 2011? So that means I had recently turned 23. It was a 2009 Honda Civic.

I bought a brand new Ford Pinto myself when I was 17. They were cheap!
@SweetMae pinto is that old?!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@mysteryespresso It is ancient!! 😂

@SweetMae I had a Pinto myself...it was my 2nd car and used (a 1974 model).
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@indyjoe Mine was a 1971

@mysteryespresso They made them from about '69/'70 until '79 or '80 that's when they replaced it with the Escort.

@indyjoe I thought mine was a first year model?? Now I know.

@SweetMae I was wrong...you were right, yours was the first model. They made them from 1971 to 1980 (I just checked). I just knew they debuted around generally that time. Sorry about that.

@indyjoe That is okay!! I am usually the one that is wrong!! 👍️

@SweetMae Wasn't that the one that blew up when it was rear ended? My parents told me that Ford got a huge lawsuit over that, and they would rather have just payed off the deaths of the victims than fix the problem.

@mysteryespresso According to research it was made from 1971-1980.

@SW-User That was a problem with the first year model only (1971)…. they did fix the problem and the car continued on until 1980 being a very popular car and one the best small cars Ford ever built.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@SW-User They had that problem on a later model I believe

@SweetMae I looked it up...it was the '71 model (I guess being a new line of vehicle), however they sold between 3 and 400,000 of them and the problem only occurred in less than 1000. It was determined to be unsafe but wasn't as big a problem because so few (in comparison to the number being used) were in rear-end accidents. Ford did pay compensation and did fix the problem, and it was no longer an issue at all.

@indyjoe Good to know. I sold the Pinto three years later and made more than I paid for it. They were good on gas.
indyjoe · 56-60, M
@SweetMae Yes the Pinto was a very dependable and reliable little car (and yes, good on gas too). Another good one was the Maverick....it kind of resembled an over grown Pinto😁.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@indyjoe They were classier...
indyjoe · 56-60, M
@SweetMae Yes they were. Ford made a big mistake (in my opinion) by doing away with those two vehicles.
