Do you remember the very first joke someone told you, when you were little?

Why did the man throw the butter out the window?
He wanted to see the butter-fly.

An uncle told me that one. Later on, I repeated it to a different uncle, who had a very different lifestyle, shall we say. He told me this one:

Why did the drunk go up on the roof?
He heard that the drinks were on the house.

I could not understand it at all, and he spent more time explaining it to me than it took to tell the joke! And after all that, I still did not think it was very funny. (I don't think I really understood what "drunk" meant.)

My grandfather used to tease us that he never wanted to visit us in our home 150 miles away because he knew the grass was blue and the sky was pink: that made me laugh at the ridiculous images in my head. Not exactly a joke, but oh so funny to a 5yo. And he often wondered what Jean was wearing if we were wearing Jean's. I have used that one myself...no child has ever found it as funny as I did. 😔😁

I can't quite remember a first joke, but I can remember laughing a lot when other 'big' people did, not having a clue about what they found so funny. I suspect I just wanted to join in. I know the pain of having to explain a joke and listening to all the joy drain from it as I spoke.
