Because both these topics are faith based topics. People get overzealous and cannot keep an open mind. Because that would mean their careful foundations are shaken up.

Harry Potter.
Was so annoyed by all the hype when it first came out that I refused to join that particular bandwagon.
Friends have since told me - indeed one told me at the time - that they're actually really good and I should ignore the hype and read them anyway... but meh, too late now.
