Have you ever spoken in front of a group of people?(both)

Be they friends or strangers?
In 1989 I addressed a Rotary Dinner Meeting of 50 Rotarians, putting the case for needed funding to start a community garden in Esperance.
Rotary is made up of Business leaders, lawyers, Judges etc. I had never before done such a thing and was a nervous wreak awaiting the time when I would be called up to speak.
Dinner was served and consumed. The chairman gave a short speech to introduce me and my purpose for being there and then it was time for me to stand and deliver.
getting to my feet I began thus,

There is a misperception that unemployed people are all lazy and will do anything to get out of working. We see all around us plenty of people whom seem to do nothing but wander the street looking for mischief to get up to or people to terrorise.........

I spoke for 25 minutes, unscripted, because I believed in what I was talking about. I was passionate about helping the downtrodden, those that Society looks down on. The Rotarians were almost mesmerised by my speech and I received a round of applause at the completion. Questions were asked of me by various members to which I supplied honest answers.
They granted not only funds, $10,000, for the project but also said they would approach Council and recommend 5 acres of Council land be granted along with Plant Machinery to prepare the plot of land.

Glad I read this because I have to speak in front of a group of people in about 10 hours. 馃槹 Although I've spoken at my local Rotary Club too, was a Toastmaster for awhile, had other public speaking trainings, made numerous speaches, presentations, etc., I'm nervous.

In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if I have social anxiety. I'll be explaining a process (that I'm not passionate about but it is what it is) with multiple steps so it's far more wordy than I'd ever would like. It'll take 2-3 minutes. I have it written down and practiced a bit today.

Although not always possible, it's far more interesting to speak on topics that one's passionate about. At the same time, being the adrenaline junky I am, I'm sure to get something out of it.

Great job getting your project funded by the way. One of my closest friends recieved a Rotary Foundation Global Scholarship, studying in Brussels. Rotary is an excellent organization.

@zeeva70 The good part is that it is only 3 minutes. Keep the notes in front of you for prompting. Good Luck. Believe in yourself.

Thanks, @Gusman!
wow! I have spoken in front of lots of people but I have not had that kind of influence. Well done!

@CinnamonWorlds Thank you. When I looked back on that meeting back home I realised that they saw the passion with which I spoke. They saw I was genuine and wanted to help. It is a good feeling when one knows that an objective was achieved because of what I said.

I appreciated the mentorship from an employer who pushed me to work on public speaking and Excel at it.

@Still4him The more you put yourself out there the less nerve wracking it becomes. When one believes in what they are talking about it is projected onto the audience.
