Was grades important to your family?

They sure were here. They made me study constantly, but thanks to that I was #3 in the student rank of the whole entire school!

Not grades per se, but effort. If I didn't put effort in my schoolwork, I was punished. If I was lazy, I was punished. If I worked hard and still got a not-so-good grade I was supported and encouraged.

@Uncle I was pressured to do get an A+. If I didn't, I was punished.

@Rain95 My parents only punished me when I didn't study hard enough. I was usually expected to be in the upper 5% of my year, though. But, for example, when I struggled in maths, and they saw I really tried hard and studied hard, they didn't punish me for 80%. They got me tuition and made me study harder. Now, if I still got 80% the next term, different story.

I was pushed and encouraged and when necessary, punished. It made me quite succesful indeed.

@Uncle I was expected to be the top 1% of the nation which I had gotten 1.2% which they were disapointed. My older sister managed to get the top 1% of the nation in college entrance exams.

@Rain95 Those are very high targets. Your parents must have cared about education a lot. I wasn't quite as good and still hold several degrees... these days, I push my students quite a bit. I demand diligence and expect excellence, I always say. The important thing is proper motivation and good work ethics.

That said, it is good if parents care about education. It is quite important for later life... I'm actually thankful my father didn't let me get away with laziness.

Congratulations to your sister!

@Uncle If you go to one of the SKY university, your whole life is set up with you. Education is extremely important here in South Korea.

My brother is currently studying for the college entrance exams (which he was a bad srudent lol) He always never studied and rebelled lol

So he'll probably get lower than all of us lol

@Rain95 I have actually been to Korea for a number of times and I've taught Koreans. I know how things are there. :)

@Uncle I'd probably push my future kids too lol
