I'm trying to give up the drinking, not so much for anyone but because for myself. To answer your question if it were a choice between drink and the one you love I would certainly try my best to give up drink.

I've never done either, but yes I would give up any unhealthy activity for someone I cared about. I consider a serious relationship a partnership.
