Why can't you leave the past in the past?

Do you really need to carry it with you still?
well. because there's certain aspects of the past that a person NEEDS to keep, lessons and warnings, memories of certain people and feelings. if we all just walked around happy go lucky completely we might be in some serious trouble. though i CAN agree that along the way some of that baggage should be unloaded. that's important. can't go around punching the rest of the world in the face and saying " it's ok that i did this because someone hurt me 20 years ago!" keep the parts you need to and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I would answer this, but it was 7 minutes ago.

Whenever someone with a five minute past talks smack about forgetting the past, moving on, starting over to a person with a 40yr history I imagine their face catching on fire.

Then telling them "oh don't worry. Time heals all wounds." Lmao
I try to leave them in the past then something triggers it all and then I find myself falling into the past again. After 30-40 years the past just is part of you and unless the memories are ripped out it’s rather hard to forget.

Too traumatic to forget
Yes, if it still affects the present. Those who forget history are often likely to repeat it.
