Have any of you ever taken self defense class?

I studied Shotokan karate for years. While I've had to use elements of it in term of reactions and deflection, I've never had to land an actual blow outside tournaments. The confidence that comes with know I could - devastatingly - is enough to let my confidence show through and keep me out of most trouble.
