I Love Animals, Pets and Nature

what I have been through has made me a stronger person... Today is not that day.
If there are any Veterinary medicine workerd out there you will understand this feeling.
Today I had to do the worst part of my job, helping with a pet euthanasia. It was this precious angels time, but he did not understand that. While placing his catheter, he was very confused and delirious, crying out. We all were trying to comfort him. But tonight after only having 4-6 hours of sleep in the combined last two nights, all I can think of is, and vividly picture in my semi-photographic mind, is that dog from today. How can I keep doing this job? My first passion is with exotic animal care, but right now I can't go back to that field. It is going to be another sleepless night for me, and then another long day at work tomorrow with people yelling at me that I don't care about their animals, when they don't know that putting down a pet that isn't even mine keeps me up crying.

I'm sorry you are going through so much pain. I was one of the folks that had to put my lovely dog out of misery. Reading how you felt let's me know it is terrible on all. If I can tell you one word of comfort they are free...and no longer suffer. Please know I value your courage. Take care. And just know I send you goodness~ I don't see why these ppl yell at you? Do they want them to suffer? They have to ok it? First, I had to...I wish you strength!

People don't understand that we are like a doctors office, that we have a limit on what we can do in one day. Also people dont like being told that they have to pay to take care of their pets, its not a free service. I get told that I am a terrible person on a daily basis because the person can not afford the care for thier own pet.

@IrishHeart21: yes, I see your point...Beyond how people have pets and can't afford them. This really is unfair to you and others. It takes a strong soul as you to endure this @ all in your profession. If i was in that position, I would think of the animals first and their wellness to not suffer. Maybe try and change locations if possible. Sorry I truly see a kind Irishheart in you! And animals know this. Thank you! Wish you peace somehow~

I hope you don't mind if I ask, is it you that must collect the money? Has anyone ever threatened you? Are you in a rural area with low income?

Our hospital cant not treat, unless for emergency or critical welfare/health of the animal with out being paid. I actually will recommend to people to go to other hospitals if it will ne cheaper for the owner, so the animal gets the care it needs. I havr no control over that policy. No one has threatened yet, but we have had police involved. Im in a semirural area, a lot of low income house holds.
And thank you for your kind words, they helped me through a really long day!

I understand your situation now. Really are doing a very needed service above and beyond.I have seen doctors that I feel treat human patients bad. And have felt this myself. I can say every veterinarian has been full of genuine compassion. I do hope no one ever causes you unbearable sadness again or harm. It is so hard having to help animals, I feel so good meeting you! Like you, I cried two days sitting on the couch after my loving furdaughter was free from pain, at times still cry...I have a new found admiration for you and others in this heart breaking profession and there is surely great stories for you to tell. Thank you Irishheart :) I have a small design company I named Simple Heart Designs~ Small world, indeed! Be well..Hope to chat again. I still think of my dear furdaughter everyday along with her, i'll think of you. And I do know she was in loving care, because I met the young lady that helped her move on, and now know it was also hard on her she took her from me for the last time and she was calm and loving, there was peace...it took me all these yrs to remember, since reading your experience gave me a new light on that day.
I live out in the country with my animals and love to farm, fruit tress and garden now that I retired. Hope where you live it is lovely for a dear person as you!

Thank you for your story as well, and so sorry for your loss, I am glad that your nurse was strong for you and you had a positive experience with veterinary staff. Not everyone is compassionate in the veterinary world, I have seen it in other hospitals and even my own sometimes which I have addressed. Yesterday I held a dog who had to have staples removed from having major surgery, it clearly hurt but that little 11yr old dog didnt make a sound, that to me is bravery! I just have to remember those moments more than the bad, thank you for reminding me of that. I have lost so many pets of my own, and I do like to let my clients who have a hard time that I really do know how it feels.
I finally got a few hours of sleep last night, so I am thinking more clearly. I have behavioral issue pets, and the last 3-4 nights have been meltdowns and temper tantrums. My 3month old hamster has not wanted me to sleep! And my 2year old dog has been scared of the wind and rain.
Thank you for your kind words to get me through it all!
