Interesting! It looks as if they stripped a lot of the bark from the tree, and I wonder if they left enough not to kill it.

@ArishMell Yes. This shows the process of collecting pine sap to be carried to the turpentine still. I have one of the tools the man is using. My grandfather owned a turpentine still. The trees were not killed. In those day, if you walked through a pine forest in the South, you would likely see trees with these scars, called "cat's face".
