The 40 hour work week is a relic of the New Deal era. The plan was for the husband to work 40 hours a week then come home and just crash while the wife would stay home and do all the cooking, cleaning, shopping, taking care of the kids, and everything else. When it was designed the plan was not for one individual to work 40 hours a week and have a neat, complete little life as well, nor was it intended for both husband and wife to work 40 hours per week. We haven’t updated our worker protection laws to keep up with the changing times.

@Theyitis So what was a single man or woman expected to do? Sane 40 hr/week. I guess, everybody got married back then though.
