My sister hijacked our wedding

This wasn't recent it was in 2003. My now wife and I were on our second go around having already been married and divorced once before, so we had just wanted a small simple wedding. We are both very laid-back, no-frills kind of people who value the marriage over the wedding. We were both working two jobs, saving every penny to buy a piece of land in the mountains to build a log cabin on, miles from anywhere. So with that being said we planned just a small get together, say "I do" grab a bite to eat and get on with our lives. That was the plan anyway. My sister got in the middle of it, took control and turned the wedding into something neither one of us would have ever wanted. Just another big, cookie cutter wedding with all the stupid crap and lousy music no one enjoys.

My wife grew up an army brat, so we were able to rent the VFW hall for next to nothing. We had planned an alcohol-free wedding reception because my wife's father had been an alcoholic and I had an uncle who had a drinking problem. Neither me or my wife drink alcohol at all, and don't enjoy being around it. So we made it clear to the 10 or 15 people we invited there would be no drinks served during the reception. That was just one of many things that went out the window when my sister decided she "needed" to plan the wedding. The guest list grew to well over 100, potluck lunch turned into a fully catered event and the country/classis rock mix tape we had put together was chucked in favor of a DJ and crappy music neither one of us even liked. We had specifically planned not to include all the usual stupid crap that happen at wedding receptions......the dollar dance, garder toss, best man speech, none of that was on the agenda........just say "i do", eat lunch, then leave......that's it. Finally, halfway through the reception i ended up getting up and telling the guests that "we're done with the stupid shit".

The worst part was we got stuck paying for the wedding we never wanted, it set us back enough that we had to wait 2 more years before buying the piece of ground we wanted.........two more years of waiting to start our lives together the way we wanted.

but, then did you eventually get to buy the land, built the cabin and enjoy life up the mountain?

@Boeing We did, not the spot we wanted, but it's just as nice

@sgoodroe this is my take with my life, I always believe that a "no" to a direction is made for there is some unfinished business that if I were to follow through with that direction ... it wouldn't be sustainable?
So some block occurs until I'm done.

That isn't to say your feelings aren't valid of course. Maybe talk to your sister about it? Express it, take it off your chest?

@Boeing Oh there was plenty of "talking" at the time

I think this is what is eating you, bud: “That was just one of many things that went out the window when my sister decided she "needed" to plan the wedding.”

You didn’t stand up to her, but my intent is not to shame. Maybe deal with that, though.

@Bumbles There's nothing "not to get", me and my wife were both working two jobs and had very little free time. My sister took it on herself to invite people, arrange the food, the music everything. We didn't know what was going on behind the scenes until we showed up at the venue expecting just a very few of our closest family members and was greeted with over a hundred people......that I was expected to pay for their meals, and drinks (this was supposed to be non alcohol). Believe me I hit the roof!

@sgoodroe Like a surprise party? So, the idea was no one would tell you?
sgoodroe · 56-60, M
@Bumbles No I think the idea was "we were too busy to plan a real wedding" so my sister gave us the kind of wedding that "people would be expecting" I guess that means big and stupidly expensive.

Just elope and save yourself the headache of dealing with family.
Bumbles · 56-60, M
@Adrift Justice of the peace for me. The idea of a wedding made me ill.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@Bumbles Yep, save the money and spend it on a honeymoon.
Bumbles · 56-60, M
@Adrift We postponed the honeymoon till the kids were off to college. Maui in two months! lol.
Maybe too late for you, but one way to side step that type incursion onto what should be your turf is with a destination wedding ... announced after it's set in stone.
