I think these are the same people who say "the Confederate flag isn't about slavery; it's about Southern culture."
They associate plantations with an elegant way of life with fancy dress and mint juleps, but somehow manage to ignore who made that life possible, and at what cost.
@DrWatson yep, to them they think it's just a "beautiful" "picturesque" building with Spanish moss, magnolias and mint juleps and sweet tea and not the atrocities being committed in them or outside of them, looks can be deceiving. In my opinion they should be used for historical and educational purposes like Auschwitz and the trail of tears or Alcatraz and not for weddings and parties.
Having weddings at classic old churches and old Prisons and Insane Asylums are not even better either, it's no different than having weddings and parties at cemeteries or at Burial mounds or at any sacred grounds unless it's for appropriate and respectful historical reasons.
@bijouxbroussard I am not familiar with that expression. But seeing as there were several Confederate flags, it does seem odd to use the expression "not hatred" when referring specifically to the Confederate battle flag, which seems to be the only one people want to fly.
@DrWatson Among those who wear or fly the image here, some believe that disclaimer should clear up misunderstandings and give them a pass. (Hint: it doesn’t .) The only reason the flag exists is because people were willing to fight in a war for the right to own other human beings, so if anything it’s a heritage of hate. I’ve explained that to more than a few folks wearing these:
@DrWatson Absolutely right ! Moreover, Germany recognized the Nazis as a shameful part of the country’s past and made flying or wearing any swaztikas or Nazi symbols illegal.
@DrWatson yep, when Germans celebrate their heritage they don't celebrate by flying Nazi flags, instead they celebrate Oktoberfest and eat German cuisine.
If I were a Southerner, I would rather have my grandmother's yummy Southern cooking and sweet tea than to fly the slavery and traitors flag and glorify and romanticize atrocities of the past because of "heritage".
Also there's plenty of Southern abolitionists to celebrate.
