My worst Thanksgiving meal, ever.

I was obviously being punished for hubris...🤣🤣🤣. I answered a post yesterday saying I had never made any Thanksgiving mistakes...🤣🤣🤣

I think I was thrown off by a last minute curve ball. My guest called me and told me NOT to make stuffing, or potatoes, or gravy, and NOT to make cranberry sauce.

My mile high apple pie contained ONE apple that did not cook, and of course it was almost ALL in the tiny sliver I served my friend...🤣🤣🤣. I thought I remembered that he likes Werther's original caramels, but apparently he only likes the HARD candies, and I bought the chewy ones...🤣

I made stuffed celery with cream cheese and sliced olives, and of course my friend let me know that the olives with the pimentos are the ONE kind he doesn't like...🤣

My green beans were hot but nearly raw...and my friend brought over a lot of pre-cooked frozen stuff that he got at a food pantry somewhere, and it was really, really bad. I had to throw out the mashed potatoes, and we made our own, but apparently I undercooked those, too...my friend had to use all his strength to mash the little cubes...🤣Then the stuffing he brought over was absolutely horrible...even though I added sauteed celery and onion to it, nothing improved the flavor which was ...no flavor. I was going to throw it out, but I think I can make turkey meatloaf with it...the squash was too sweet...my friend is normally very good at squash, which he made himself...and the gravy he brought was nearly white. If not for the pan drippings and being able to doctor it up, that would have stunk, too. 🤯

But I WILL say that the cranberry sauce rocked. It was orange flavored, and contained bits of candied orange rind. 😁

AND the potato chips with onion dip were absolutely perfect. 🤣🤣🤣 🤣🤣🤣

Some of my most cherished memories are of things that might otherwise be called disasters, shared with friends. I remember them with a smile, able to picture reactions........and even laughter. All your perfect meals become unremarkable. You'll not forget this one. Kind of like the making of a Chevy Chase vacation or holiday movie. These times (there will surely be others) are why God gave us a sense of humor.

I have always felt bad for folks who feel tremendous pressure to perform a perfect culinary miracle at Thanksgiving. Really the people that love you are thankful for you and want to share being thankful with you. I am sure your meal was completely yummy anyway.

All that work! But the goodwill and care that went into all that preparation, along with wonderful company, would have made it a great night - particularly with that cranberry sauce.

@Abstraction Well...🤔🤔🤔...I guess that's a charitable take on it...🤭🤭🤭. You are too kind! And you forgot to mention the awesome potato chips and onion dip! 🤣🤣🤣

Sounds like ye had a great time
Anyone can have a mishap, it's what is done about it, is what matters ❤️

@antonioioio Awww!!! That is a super nice thing to say!

@4meAndyou years ago one Xmas day when our kids were small we took the turkey out of the oven left it on kitchen sink to cool a bit, left the kitchen for a little while, came back in to find out that the turkey was gone
A cat had come in the kitchen window at the sink and got the turkey out of the window and made bits of it on the ground

@antonioioio And now it's a fun story you can tell forever!

Most people would be thrilled to be at your Thanksgiving meal.

@Riverman2 Well, I suppose raw green beans are not the worst thing ever...🤣🤣🤣...and I really should be MUCH more thankful that we are eating at all.

@4meAndyou Absolutely.
Everyone ends up having one of those Thanksgiving dinners

@bowman81 You definitely altered my perception of that Thanksgiving...and now I will treasure it forever!!! Or until dementia hits...whichever comes first...🤣🤣🤣

That sounds like a whole load of rejection, catering for a finicky eater isn't any fun - at all!
