Oh my god, I thought only I experienced this stuff!
I once lived in a house in suburbia. My next door neighbor was a retired Xerox engineering geek from Wales, UK but was now living in Canada. At precisely 8am one sunny Sunday morning, I was awakened by the sound of a gas-powered lawnmower running, except the engine was running at low speed and the proximity of the lawnmower remained constant.
Running to my bedroom window stark naked and now somewhat pissed off, I see a red lawnmower idling away at lower power on his front lawn, unattended with no one in sight. I waited about 5 minutes, but nobody showed up to cut his grass. After a few more minutes, he wandered out of his house wearing those hideous black rubber knee-high Welly's with rubber orange soles and of course, short pants. Ever seen a guy wearing black socks in leather sandals while walking along a beach? You get the picture! In his defense, he needed the rubber shit-boots (which Canadian pig farmers call them), because the morning dew was so heavy that the lawnmower was blowing water and wet grass out the chute by the time he finally got started cutting.
Later on that same day, I got around to asking him why he left the lawn mower running unattended when small children lived right across the street from him? His reply, "Well, to warm up the engine while I'm finishing my morning coffee in the kitchen!".
For two more years I listened to that jackass warming up his lawnmower for 15 minutes every Sunday morning as he finished his coffee. What I couldn't stand the most however, was seeing a grown man walking back and forth across his lawn wearing knee-high Welly's just to cut the grass! Hip waders I could understand, but black and orange Welly's and short pants?
